By the time we discovered Calo and placed our son there for treatment, we were traumatized by his behavior and he was so heavily medicated that he was a mere shadow of his former self. While it may not necessarily be the norm, over the course of his eleven months at Calo, we were able to take him off all his medications (and he is still off them all over a year later). He received excellent, consistent care by a staff that was committed to their treatment model. Though there are risks and incidents anywhere, we never feared for his safety. We placed our son at Calo in order to give him hope in life, but we all received help, healing and support that has changed our lives.

Calo has been a life-changing for me I was there for about four and a half years and I have grown and learned so much how to empathize how to grow better and healthier relationships and how to become interdependent it is a great and wonderful safe place to be at the activities are great training and grooming the canines as wonderful and go on a camping trip has the best I do miss it sometimes butt it has made me a better person and who I am today a wife and a mother and a college student and I'm so grateful for every single person that was in that program.

Calo was our third residential treatment program in a year. From first contact with the admissions team we knew this place was different. Our son has been at Calo for a little over four months and we have seen so much progress. A few weeks ago when I asked why he was not acting out violently as often as he had in the other facilities he responded "I am safe here."

I Feel CALO is a wonderful facility. I first hand observed the staff and their interactions with students. They exuded tolerance, patience, and kindness while in the presence of the children. My husband and I were employed for a short 3 weeks as sub contractors as part of their facility makeover to give the students an updated commons area, along with a new dog walk for the Golden Retrievers which are issued to each child as part of therapy to help the students learn responsibilities, trust, love and respect. A much needed place with a great program that is needed in many towns and cities to help assist youth seeking help.

One major difference that sets Calo apart from our other experience is the parent training. Not only is our son learning tools to help him live successfully outside of the center, we are gaining a better understanding of his struggles and are learning how to better support him when he does return home.

I am a former student of CALO. I went to calo because i was self harming, had no trust for people to help or take care of me, i was reacting in a very negative way to people over the simplest things. I had been diagnosed with Reactive attachment disorder. This pretty much means that i was not having healthy relationships with people around me. I was also diagnosed with major depressive disorder and thinking about suicide as an option to end my suffering. My family tried to do everything they could to help me themselves but they were not equipped nor were they sure of how they could help me. They decided to send me off to a treatment center and what made Calo stand out to them was there relationship based model. They loved that they don't use a good behavior leveling system, which has been proven to usually cause more harm than good. They also knew that i would love that fact that Calo used dogs, specifically golden retrievers to help build trust and reconnect with humans again in a healthy manner. It was hard for me to trust people at Calo in the beginning. I was very shut off and isolated myself often. The staff there were so kind and always showed me in countless ways how they cared about me and wanted me to learn to trust them. They were patient and understanding of my individual needs. I also starting training and taking care of one of the canines named Toby. He was a large part of my treatment and helped me want to better myself so that i could be a better caregiver for him. There were many ups and downs during my treatment at Calo. No person is perfect and i loved that they understood that and always continued to help you grow as an individual and would never hold it against you if you were having a rough day or week. I was able to graduate the program and transition home. I still have my rough days or weeks but one of the most valuable lessons that Calo taught me was how to deal with my feelings and fears in a healthy way rather than a destructive way. I learned that i was important and my feelings and thoughts were important and valid. My family wasn't always against me like i had previously perceived. So thank you Calo for turning my life around and helping me be the best person that others knew i could be. I don't know where i would be in my life right now without you and all the staffs help and loving care.
